Duckweed oil is expected to be industrialized next year

Recently, the reporter learned from the Chinese Academy of Sciences that Princeton University and the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Process Engineering, Peking University, PetroChina Research Institute of Petroleum and Petrochemicals, etc. have jointly completed research on the use of duckweed as a raw material for the refinement of biofuels. Research shows that the daily production of 5000 barrels of duckweeds on a transportation fuel scale can compete with oil transportation fuels when oil prices exceed 72 US dollars per barrel.

The latest research between China and the United States pointed out that through analysis of different refining conditions, when the oil price exceeds 100 US dollars per barrel, the small-scale leucobacter refining process (1000 barrels of traffic fuel per day) can be cost-effectively related to oil. Transport fuels compete, and the larger scale process of duckweed refining (production of 5,000 barrels of traffic fuel per day) can compete with oil transportation fuels when oil prices exceed $72 a barrel. Domestic experts pointed out to this reporter that, according to the data available at the current stage, as early as 2014, duckweed oil production is expected to move toward industrialization, and people can really use algae biofuels.

Prior to the publication of this study, companies in the country have been involved in technical research in the field of “algae oil”. Headquartered in Langfang, Hebei, the New Austrian Group has received worldwide attention as early as 2009 for its successful development of “Microalgae Carbon Absorption”. Liu Minsheng, general manager of the New Energy Technology Center of the New Energy Group, once told the media that by 2014, the company's microalgal biodiesel demonstration project in Inner Mongolia will reach 5,000 tons of design capacity one after another and formally realize industrialization.
