FLIR Introduces Thermal Imaging Traffic Sensors for Vehicular Network Applications

The V2X technology is a new type of anti-collision system, based on information exchange and communication between nearby vehicles and transportation infrastructure, capable of alerting the driver of potential safety hazards around the vehicle. In the V2X system, both the vehicle and the transportation infrastructure have a communication unit installed to transmit information. The FLIR ThermiCam V2X can be mounted on existing traffic lights and use thermal imaging data to probe vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists at intersections. Using dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) technology, it can transmit real-time speed and direction data of the vehicle, communicate with the ThermiCam V2X the status of pedestrians and cyclists, and real-time data from other vehicles.
ThermiCam V2X can prioritize traffic lights at crowded intersections and main roads for public transport vehicles such as emergency vehicles and ambulances, ultimately improving traffic conditions and the safety of all vehicles. In addition, because ThermiCam V2X can be interconnected with existing urban transportation systems, urban traffic planners can build future-oriented transportation infrastructure and avoid large investments in technological transformation.
