Japan Develops New Method for Manufacturing Alloy Nanoparticles

Japan’s Tokyo Institute of Technology recently issued a press release saying that researchers at the university have developed a new method that can precisely control the synthesis process of alloy nanoparticles and, on this basis, create an alloy consisting of three metal atoms with a size of only 1 nanometer. Particles can be used as a catalyst for industrial chemical reactions.

Alloy particles composed of a small number of atoms and having a size of only a few nanometers or less have unique properties and have broad industrial application prospects. Compared to materials containing only one or two metals, alloy nanoparticles composed of a variety of metal atoms generally have better properties, but it is difficult to control the composition and size of the nanoparticles at the same time in the synthesis process.

Researchers at the Tokyo Institute of Technology recently reported in the US "Science for Progress" that they use a class of compounds called dendrimers to achieve precise control of the number of atoms contained in alloy nanoparticles. Dendrimers have a highly ordered dendritic structure and are suitable as templates for alloy nanoparticles.

The new alloy nanoparticles consist of three metal atoms: copper, platinum and gold. It was found that the new alloy nanoparticles can catalyze the oxidation of hydrocarbons. With the addition of auxiliary substances, they can function at room temperature and pressure, and the efficiency is higher than that of current commercial platinum catalysts. 24 times.

The press release said that the new synthesis method is expected to expand its application to the synthesis of other alloy particles to produce catalysts suitable for various chemical reactions and optical, electronic and energy products.
