Recently, scientists from Rutgers University in New Jersey, led by associate professor Jonathan P. Singer, conducted experiments by using an existing method called electrospray deposition technology. Prior to this, this technology has been applied in some fields, such as coating vaccines on drugs or adding light-absorbing layers on solar cells. However, in this new research from Rutgers University, it is used to apply polymer films to complex 3D printed objects made of multiple materials. In fact, a coating can even be applied to a soft gel structure similar to a hydrogel. The coating remains intact when the object expands and contracts during the process of absorbing and releasing moisture. In all cases, it requires only a small amount of liquid to completely cover each object. The researchers are currently developing an accessory that can be added to existing 3D printers, which will enable them to apply the coating to objects using electrospray deposition technology.
