In the past 2007, Seco Tools' global sales amounted to nearly $1 billion, an increase of 13% year-on-year.
In Greater China, due to the rapid development of China's manufacturing industry, Seco's sales in China have exceeded 300 million yuan, an increase of nearly 40% year-on-year. It is one of the fastest growing regions in the global market.
At the same time, the face of Seco China has changed a year. The company has recently expanded its production and office space by 2,400 square meters. The 2007 Asia-Pacific Technology Seminar held at the end of last year was held at the training center on the second floor of Building 8, No. 456, Honglu Road. The first floor of the new building is used to produce non-standard tools and cutting demonstrations, and the second floor is the office of the manufacturing department, design department, technical center and related supporting facilities. At the beginning of this year, senior leaders of the headquarters led by CEO Mr.Kai Wärn also specially came to Shanghai to participate in the ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the completion of the new office building.
It is worth pointing out that the achievements made by Seco Tools are mainly attributed to the annual research and development costs of our advanced products, Seco Tools, which account for about 5% of our sales, as large as the cutting principle, small in metallography. Analysis, we have a team that has been persistently making unremitting efforts.
In the field of machining, Seco always grasps the cutting-edge technology and development direction of metal cutting tools. After a hundred years of inheritance, Seco's product range has evolved from the initial single-milling series to the series of milling, turning, drilling and other series at the end of the last century. Until now, it covers the full range of cars, milling, drilling, reaming, boring and tool holder systems. . Its market image has also evolved from the “king of milling†to the “trustworthy tooling system supplierâ€, which has evolved into the “machinery overall solution providerâ€. Our goal is to become a strategic partner of our customers.
While expanding the product range, innovation has always been the main theme of Seco's product development. The 45° lead angle face milling cutter and the “Little Devil†replaceable head ball end mills introduced by the company in the 1980s respectively solved the 74° lead angle milling cutter milling steel parts that plagued the tool industry at that time. When the material is too large, the radial cutting force is too large and the small-diameter arbor can change the cutter head and the rod body. Seco's carbide inserts have also evolved from a two-digit series to a four-digit series over the past 20 years. At the same time, the successful development of new materials has also enabled the cutting parameters to be continuously improved.
In the search for factors that influence the ability to process a wide range of materials, Seco has explored all possibilities up to the atomic level. This led to the birth of a new type of blade coating technology that has proven to outperform the original level in performance, especially for machining steel. In 2007, Seco has introduced the new material grade TP2500 for Duratomic turning inserts, which has improved the performance of steel processing to a new level.
Duratomic is the latest development of Seco Tools. Duratomic's excellent toughness and wear resistance will be the direction of the development of (blade) coatings in the next few years, and will have a huge impact on the productivity of metal processing.
Later, Seco introduced the Duratomic grades TM2000 and TM4000 for stainless steel turning. Subsequently, the Duratomic technology was extended to the field of milling, and the new Duratomic grades MP1500, MP2500, MK1500, and MK3000 for milling were newly introduced. Therefore, it is foreseeable that 2008 will be a year in which Duratomic grades are used in metal processing.
So where is the mystery of Duraromic? How is its excellent performance achieved?
There are many ways to improve the performance of coated products, such as fine-tuning the chemical composition in the coating furnace, more careful structural control of each coating, fine grinding of the top and bottom of the coated insert, and even polishing of the cutting edge after plating, all These are good for the end user.
In addition to these improvements over the past few years, Seco has attempted to adopt a relatively more basic approach to improving the performance of the coating. For example, some colleagues believe that one of the reasons for polishing certain grades of blade cutting edges is to remove the flaws in the coating itself. Seco also used this measure because it can improve smoothness, eliminate residual stress and reduce cutting friction by polishing. But what if these flaws are not the primary factor? This issue has led Seco to recognize that it must also work to improve the integrity of each coating structure.
If we start from the original place, there are two different forms of alumina applied to the coating: k and a. The difference between the two lies in the difference in crystal structure. For example, ceramic sanitary products and rubies are made of alumina. The difference between the two is in the way the atoms are arranged. When used as a tool material, we prefer to use a phase alumina. However, the k phase is easier to deposit, so the k phase is first deposited and then the coating is heat treated in the furnace to convert it to phase a. When this treatment is carried out, a shrinkage in volume is caused, which has a direct consequence that cracks are inevitably generated. Until the high-level coating experts solved how to directly deposit a-phase alumina, the structure became crack-free.
You can also use another material for analogy. We all know that diamond is the hardest material known to man. It can be opened relatively easily from a certain crystal direction. Diamond can resist any form of damage or wear very well. By carefully adjusting the circulation of the coating, Seco's R&D team has mastered how to control the crystal structure of these coatings to improve toughness and wear resistance. This is the “Duratomic†process we have named, which hopes it will reflect our idea of controlling the coating to make it more durable through atomic processes. By introducing another direction of crystallization into the cutting, the toughness and wear resistance of the tool can be improved.
What Seco's R&D team did was chemically change the crystal structure of the alumina (Al2O3) layer to create a coating that provides longer tool life and improved cutting capabilities. We believe this will completely change the performance expectations of future material grade developments. The development of coatings with Duratomic technology can be combined with any different substrate to create a new generation of grades with peak performance and a wide range of applications.
The conventional alumina coating has a hardness of about 27.5 (GPa). The hardness of Duratomic is approximately 30.5 (GPa), which is increased by 10%-15%. The increase in hardness translates directly into an increase in wear resistance and, therefore, tool life. In a typical application, the operating temperature of the coating is also reduced from 915 ° C to 880 ° C, which is sufficient to greatly improve the anti-crater wear performance.
This grade is black and is due to the adhesion of alumina to the underlying titanium carbonitride layer. Ti(C,N) is very hard and wear resistant. Below it is a brand new substrate that is considered to be an ideal partner for this coating and also features a cobalt-rich zone, which means that cobalt is transferred from the core of the structure to the surface. Undoubtedly, Seco has improved the toughness of this grade.
The technological innovation of the tool is not only the innovation of the material, but also the examples of the innovation of the tool structure. Secofix, a new product of Seco reamer, was created by combining the advantages of Precimaster and Bifix. Precifix's product name itself is a combination of the suffixes of the other two reamer names, and its design philosophy also reflects this. Precifix is a blade-adjustable reamer that guarantees IT class 6 accuracy. Thanks to the use of a single adjustable screw system, the adjustment operation is as simple as possible: no need to adjust the inverted cone. Its main advantages are: economy, the use of lower cost indexable inserts; modular, using the same toolholder as Precimaster; flexibility, the same type of cutter head with two cooling methods (through holes or blind holes).
The above research and development results, according to the user after the trial, the effect is quite good, so the order is also endless, and I believe that in the new year, there will be better new products came into being. At present, Seco employees are confident that they will draw a new development plan.
