Japan Printing has developed a "DNP super-weather-resistant hard-coating transfer film" that can improve abrasion resistance and weather resistance by transferring to resin glass. It is said to have been used as a Plexiglas in the windows of railway vehicles. From February 2016, the company will sell Plexiglas using this film for railway vehicles, construction machinery, passenger cars and buses. This film utilizes a technology developed by Dainippon Printing Co., Ltd. that radiates electron beams to harden the coating resin, which was cultivated in the production of residential building decoration materials. Due to the high hardness coating that can be formed, the resin glass using this film is more resistant to wear on the surface than the polycarbonate (PC) resin used as a general-purpose product, resulting in less discoloration and deterioration due to ultraviolet rays (Figure 1, 2). Although the original PC resin glass has excellent processing efficiency, its weather resistance, hardness, and scratch resistance are not as good as glass. In addition, processing costs can be reduced by transferring the film while molding the resin glass. It weighs about 1/2 the weight of glass and has the same transparency as glass. It is also excellent in impact resistance and safety. By the way, Dainippon Printing exhibited the film at the “Automobile WORLD Automotive Lightweight Technology Exhibition†held at Tokyo Ariake International Convention and Exhibition Center from January 13th to 15th, 2016.
