Russian scientists put forward the hypothesis of using lasers to supply power from Earth to satellites

According to the Russian "Satellite" News Network on July 5th, scholars of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences proposed to use the powerful laser on Earth to supply power to satellites, which means a qualitative leap in space communications. According to reports, the Institute of Nuclear Physics currently has three free-electron lasers that provide different wavelength bands of infrared radiation. In 2016, the institute began experimenting with a new powerful free electron laser with unique parameters in the world.

Nikolai Vinokurov, director of the research laboratory of the Institute of Nuclear Physics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told reporters on July 4th: "The number of satellites is increasing, but they have problems with limited power supply. As we all know, solar panels provide about 10 Kilowatts of electricity. If these satellites receive power from Earth via infrared, then, for example, they can provide 100 kilowatts of electricity for satellites."

He pointed out that the manufacture of several powerful free electron lasers capable of powering communications satellites means a qualitative leap in space communications, navigation systems, and other fields. Vinokuuri believes that this method will replace solar panels to power satellites in the near future.
