Several common methods for aluminum alloy cutting

When the company started the urban rail aluminum alloy body project in 2003, it introduced the cutting equipment such as plasma cutting machine, high-pressure water jet cutting machine and laser cutting machine. These three different methods of blanking have their own advantages and disadvantages. We use different equipment to process aluminum alloy raw materials according to the needs of the products.


Plasma cutting

Plasma cutting is a process in which a high-temperature, high-speed plasma arc is used as a heat source to partially melt the cutting metal while blowing the molten metal away by a high-speed air stream to form a narrow incision. Hydrogen is used as the cutting gas, argon is used as the arcing gas, and nitrogen is the vortex gas, which cools the various parts of the cutting torch and blows off the melted metal.


The advantages of plasma cutting are: fast processing speed, strong processing capability for medium and thick plates and large plates. However, plasma cutting products require secondary processing, and the arc generated by the cutting is large, the gas and dust are toxic, and the environment is highly polluted.


2. High pressure water jet cutting

The high-pressure water jet cutting uses a high-pressure cylinder to pressurize ordinary tap water to 250-400 MPa, and then sprays a high-speed jet of 800-1000 m/s through a gem nozzle with a bore diameter of 0.15-0.35 mm, and is in a water arrow. Add the right amount of sand to cut all the soft and hard materials. The advantage of water cutting is that there is almost no heat generated during cutting, and the product has no thermal deformation, which can ensure the dimensional accuracy of the product; the slit is narrow and the cutting surface is smooth, no secondary processing is required, and the production efficiency is improved; the water cutting can be well Solve some cutting materials with high melting point, alloys, composite materials and other special materials. However, due to the tolerance error caused by the waterjet water arrow lag and the oblique beveling phenomenon, the use of waterjet machining does not achieve the best results for parts exceeding a certain thickness (40mm or more) or high precision.


3. Laser cutting

Laser cutting is a new type of processing technology, which has been widely used in various industries such as metal cutting, glass cutting and engraving. A laser is a kind of light that is produced by the transition of atoms (molecules or ions, etc.), but unlike ordinary light, the laser depends on spontaneous emission only for the first time, and the subsequent process is completely determined by the laser radiation. Therefore, the laser has high coherence, high strength, and high directivity. After the laser cutting machine generates laser light by the laser, it is transmitted by the mirror and irradiated onto the processed object through the collecting mirror, so that the processed object (surface) receives strong heat and temperature. The sharp increase causes the point to melt or vaporize rapidly due to high temperature, and cooperates with the trajectory of the laser head to achieve the purpose of processing.


The advantage of the laser cutting machine is that the machining has no mechanical pressure on the workpiece, so the precision of the cut product is high, no secondary processing is required; the cutting speed is fast, the operation is simple, the degree of automation is high; the product can be cut into any complicated shape, and it is often more punched. The cutting and model pressing process is preferred. Although the processing rate is slower than the punching, it saves the mold cost and the economic cost is low. However, for aluminum alloy sheets with a thickness of more than 6 mm, laser processing is used, the cutting effect is not good, and the equipment has high requirements on the use environment, and the repair time is long after the equipment malfunctions.


4. Conclusion

Three different methods of blanking have their own advantages and disadvantages. After several years of application, they have been used stably in the mass production of aluminum alloy fittings for urban rail vehicles, and achieved good results. At the same time, we are also further exploring the application of cutting machines such as circular saws and rifling machines in the production of aluminum alloy parts for urban rail vehicles.
